Richard A. Brooks spent his early childhood in Canada and his formative years growing up in Roscoe, New York. After finishing his undergraduate studies in Radio-Television at the University of Arizona in Tucson, he worked briefly in Washington D.C. and later Britain, Norway, Ireland and Austria.
He taught English in Tokyo from 1988 to 1994, while freelancing as a photographer. Brooks joined US broadcaster CNBC business news television in Hong Kong before the handover of the territory from British to Chinese rule in 1997.
He was hired by Agence France-Presse’s regional headquarters in 1998 and became deputy photo director for Asia-Pacific in 2006.
Brooks has worked for AFP Photo at political and sporting events, including many APEC and ASEAN summits, G8/G20 summits, various presidential elections, numerous Australian Open tennis tournaments, the Asian Games, Commonwealth Games, summer Olympic Games in Beijing and Athens and the 2002, 2006 and 2010 World Cup football tournaments.
He recently served on the jury for the Yonhap International Press Photo Awards (YIPPA).
