Amanda Hopkinson

Amanda Hopkinson is Visiting Professor in the School of Arts at City University, London and at Manchester University. Her first book on photography was a biography of Julia Margaret Cameron (Virago); later subjects include Martin Chambi and of Manuel Alvarez Bravo (both Phaidon); and, most recently, of her mother, Gerti Deutsch, whose photographs are currently on view in the Judisches Museum, Vienna, and the OKF Gallery, Prague.

Areas of specialist interest are Latin American culture (she has published widely and translated some twenty books from the Americas) and European photography (she continues to review for the European and Latin American media, and for Aperture magazine in the United States). Her forthcoming publications include A History of Photography in Mexico (Reaktion) and a translation of Leonora by Elena Poniatowska (a novelised biography of the Surrealist artist, Leonora Carrington for Profile Books).
